He Could Be Called AT(C)M Punk
He
is no stranger to controversy. Anyone who followed his professional
wrestling career knows that the “straight-edge superstar" always
marched to beat of his own drum. His “pipe-bombs” made headlines and
became newsworthy on several major media outlets. His in-ring ability was
exceptional yet was only surpassed by his verbiage. Simply put, CM Punk
could talk people into seats. But the big question is can he walk-the-walk?
In late 2014, Punk announced his official entrance into the UFC. For
professional wrestling fans, the scene was surreal. For MMA fight fans, it
was outrageous. Yes, Punk managed to cause controversy in just two minutes
of screen time. Immediately, Joe Rogan asked the hard questions. Where
will he train? What division will he compete in? When will he fight? And
against who? But every question was immediately met with uncertainty.
Recently, Dana White found a promising potential opponent by the name of
Mickey Gall. And as of now, Punk is almost guaranteed to debut against
Gall in the Octagon. To some, it’s a foregone conclusion that Punk will
be soundly defeated. But either way, his debut will make a significant
amount of money for the UFC. So why follow it up with some dream fights?
With this being said, here are a few potential dream opponents (yes, some
maybe unrealistic) for CM Punk down the line:
Conor McGregor – okay, so the new UFC Featherweight champion is
already extremely busy. Conor has proven he doesn't mind competing at
different weight divisions. Or maybe Punk could cut some more weight and
further piss off the entire MMA world by already challenging for a UFC
championship. No matter what division this fight could take place in, the
the verbal joust between these two would probably set an all-time record
gate for the UFC. And probably increase hits on UFC's Youtube channel at
the same time.
Chances of Punk actually winning – 1/5
Potential to make massive money – 5/5
Potential for this fight actually happening – 2/5
*Whenever there is potential to make huge money, the UFC will always take
that route. And this fight has that potential.
Nick
or Nate Diaz – now this would be gold. Either Diaz fits the bill
here. Nate had some choice words for Punk in an interview following the
announcement of his future debut. However, Nick Diaz is the very
antithesis of CM Punk. The fighter who’s presently banned due to yet
another failed drug test for excessively high levels of marijuana versus
the man who’s lived “straight-edge” for his entire life! And you
know that if Nick Diaz was to face CM Punk, it would automatically see
Diaz as the beloved antihero of MMA against Punk, as the villain. And to
new fans of CM Punk, he’s vastly more entertaining when he’s the
“bad guy”.
Chances of Punk actually winning – 1/5
Potential to make crazy amounts of cash – 5/5
Chances of this fight actually happening – 4/5
*Punk probably couldn't defeat either Diaz brother mainly due to
inexperience. But it’ll make a “pretty-penny” and probably set a new
record. The money in this fight would be too lucrative to simply look
past.
George
St-Pierre – Georges St-Pierre is unquestionably one of the greatest
fighters ever! GSP left the UFC as champion and with his legacy intact. He
has a reputation of being a gentleman but a legitimate super-athlete. So
why would this even seem like a viable fight? Money. Story. History.
Legacy. This fight could take place in either Montreal or Chicago and will
make massive amounts of money while guaranteeing to set new records for
the UFC. The story of a returning legend to destroy a newbie “punk”
would instantly draw fans of all ages, demographics and generations.
Pro-wrestling fans, present-day UFC fans and original MMA fans would clamor
for this historical fight. And depending on who wins, their legacy will be
etched forever. GSP wouldn’t have anything significant to gain however,
his return to the Octagon against Punk could undoubtedly set a record.
Whereas if Punk pulled off the biggest upset in MMA history and managed to
defeat Georges, he would be the man to defeat the great GSP!
Chances of Punk defeating GSP – 1/5
Potential of banking huge money – 6/5
Chances of this fight actually happening – 0/5
*This would be based on if GSP is going to return or if he’d even
entertain this concept. GSP has always craved challenging opponents over
money so this fight would probably go against St-Pierre’s personal
philosophy.
